How to gain rank

1: First you need entry to the castle (level six required, and then if you are not a noble you have to bribe the guards).
2: You go into the Royal Court (as with the castle you have to bribe a guard if you are not noble).
3: For your first rank, you only have to petition once(5,000 marks and 3 quests), at least that is what has always happened for me.
To be sure, I would mingle a few times in advance.
4: Every rank gets exponentially more difficult to gain.

Tips:
Petitioning & Standing:
There is a certain amount of money that you have to petition to the queen to gain a rank.
This amount increases exponentially with each new rank.
By raising your standing through doing the various actions, you decrease the amount of money required to go to the next level.
I don't know the formulas, but from personal experience, it seems to be best to do a combination of petitioning and other actions.
The ratio seems to increase as you get to higher ranks, but that might just be my opinion.
For beginning I would say 4 actions to 1 petition, but for the last few, I would say like 30 to 1.
There are 4 actions that you can do that influence your standing in the court:
Dice, Boast, Mingle, and Game.
They all take 1 quest each.

Dice: You basically gamble with your money.
The odds are against you and you don't gain that much standing in the court.
I wouldn't do this unless I was desperate for wits.
You gain wits from this, sometimes.

Boast: This has the biggest potential of increasing standing in the court, but because of the large potential of decreasing your standing as well, this averages out to not be that good.
Plus, if you get thrown out from boasting, you lose half of your money.
You gain charm from this, sometimes.

Mingle: I would definitely say that this is the best action.
It never decreases your standing, yet it can increase it almost as much as the best boast.
I do this almost exclusively.
You gain charm from this, sometimes.

Game: This does very little to raise your standing in the court.
It is possible to get hurt from gaming (a friend of mine died from it, because he didn't heal himself before doing it).
I wouldn't do this unless I was desperate for guts.
You gain guts from this, sometimes.

Investing: I've only done this twice. It takes five quests and 100k marks.
You find out the results from investing the next day, and the odds are against you (or so I've heard, as I have gained once and lost once).
I don't think it affects your standing, so I wouldn't do this simply because of the many quests it takes.
